Grace Academy v Valor South Austin

August 31, 2023

The Grace Academy Griffins took the filed with only seven players. The Griffins were without three starters from their week one game and had to look to all three freshmen on the team to step up and contribute.

The game started poorly as Grace allowed the Valor Falcons to drive the field and put six on the board. It turned worse when the following kickoff was recovered by the Falcons who quickly drove to make the score 12-0 with more than five minutes left in the first quarter.

The Griffins rebounded by driving the length of the field down to the Falcon one yard line before being stopped on lost yardage from a fumble. They managed to drive to inside the ten another time but still came away with zero points and the halftime score remained 12-0.

The second half was more like the first with the Griffins moving the ball but not being able to score and the Falcons capitalizing on three out of six fourth downs while the Griffins were 0-4 on fourth down. Grace also lost the turnover battle as they gave up the ball three times to the Falons single interception.

Grace compiled an impressive 262 yards of rushing with Maxwell gaining 229 yards on 26 carries. The defense was led by McGahey as he had 10 tackles on the night. However, the Griffins lost all three phases on the game having more turnovers, penalties and being unable to finish drives.

The Griffins will look forward to having at least two starters back next week as they face a veteran NYOS team (1-1) which will be looking to build on its win over WILCO.
