Grace Academy fell in their inaugural season opener by the score of 47 to 12. The first quarter witnessed the Griffins turning over the ball twice and both of which led to Vanguard scores. While the score was 8-0 at the end of the first quarter, Vanguard exploited another turnover and put up 22 points in the second quarter.
Grace was able to get on the board late in the third quarter when Caleb McGahey was able to score the first of his two touchdowns on a 21 yard run. However, the Griffins were no match for Vanguard’s big play offense which had eight plays over 21 yards (mostly on long pass completions).
Defensively, the Griffins were led by McGahey (4 tackles) and Wilkes (3 tackles, 1 INT) and held their opponent to 16 rushing yards on 8 carries.
The achilles heel for the Griffins was the turnover differential. Grace fumbled the ball 7 times and lost four while also throwing an interception. Vanguard was able to turn all of the turnovers into points while the Griffins were unable to capitalize on their one interception before halftime.
The Griffins put up 190 yards of total offense and over 150 yards on the ground. So there is some promise they can put points on the board if they can eliminate the turnovers.
The Griffins will try to turn it around next week when they face the 1-0 South Austin Valor Falcons.
