The discipline in being a disciple
I am not afraid of a person who knows 10,000 ways to kick. I’m afraid of a person who knows one way to kick and has practiced it 10,000 times. Bruce Lee
Being a disciple, means being committed to the relationship, team or person to whom you serve. Disciples strive to imitate the master or achieve the standard. It requires discipline to be a disciple.
The focus it takes to reach the pinnacle is illustrated in Bruce Lee's dedication to the martial arts and specifically his understanding that it's not the knowledge of many forms of martial arts that make a person dangerous; instead, it is the singularity of focus that is difficult to defeat.
There is a saying in coaching that it's not the Xs and O's but instead the Jimmie's and Joe's that make the difference in success. While having better athletes should not be taken lightly, I would still prefer a team of disciples with lesser physical skills. Athletes dedicated to practicing one kick 10,000 times.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” Matthew 16:24-25
Being a disciple of Jesus means more than just acknowledging Him as Savior; it involves a deep, committed relationship where we strive to emulate His life and teachings. In Matthew 16:24-25, Jesus lays out the essential elements of discipleship: self-denial, taking up our cross, and following Him.
Self-Denial:To deny ourselves means to put aside our own desires and priorities, making God's will our primary focus. This act of surrender is not about neglecting our needs but about aligning our lives with God’s purpose. It’s a call to trust in His plan and wisdom above our own.
Taking Up Our Cross:Taking up our cross signifies a willingness to endure challenges, sacrifices, and even persecution for the sake of Christ. It’s a reminder that following Jesus is not always easy, but it is rewarding.
Following Jesus:To follow Jesus means to walk in His footsteps, living according to His teachings and example. It involves daily decisions to love, serve, forgive, and show grace. It's about allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our actions and transform our hearts to reflect Christ more accurately.
As coaches and athletes, what must we do to surrender for the good of the team? What steps must we take to discipline ourselves for the good of the team? What needs to be done and what role do you need to play?
Spiritually, true discipleship requires commitment, sacrifice, and a heart willing to follow wherever Jesus leads. Consider what areas of your life you might need to surrender to God. Are there crosses you are reluctant to carry? Reflect on how you can better follow Jesus in your daily life.
